John E. Owen, Professor of Trumpet and Director of Bands, received a Bachelor of Music Education from Illinois Wesleyan University, a Master of Music degree in trumpet and conducting from Southern Illinois University, and the Ph.D. in music education (concentrations in trumpet and conducting) from The Ohio State University. Dr. Owen conducts the Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble. He has extensive performing experience in solo recital, orchestra and brass band and is an active clinician and guest conductor. He is past president of the Ohio Private College Instrumental Conductor's Association, and state board member of Ohio Music Education Association. His trumpet teachers include Armando Ghitalla and Richard Burkart. He is active in many professional organizations including the International Trumpet Guild, the College Music Society, Music Educators National Conference, the International Association for Jazz Educators, and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. He is a frequent clinician with school bands, most recently the Marion County (OH) High School Honor Band and the OMEA District II Junior High Honor Band.
