When the third movement is performed alone (without the first two movements), the composer recommends a cut from the downbeat of bar 517 to the downbeat of bar 545. This material is a reprise of the opening of the first movement which serves to tie the movements together, but which will make little sense to the audience if they have not heard the first movement.
