Ayers’ Townsend ‘Y’ co-wins Dayton Ballet “New Music for New Dance”

Composer Jesse Ayers has been named one of the three winners nationwide of the Dayton Ballet’s New Music for New Dance competition.  The program matches three composers with three choreographers culminating in a series of world premiere ballet performances. His winning work, Mountain River Escapades [which includes Tubing the Townsend ‘Y’], was selected by jury from a national call for scores. Ayers work was choreographed by Susanne Payne and presented in five performances March 24-27, 2011.

Program Notes

The Townsend ‘Y’ is the confluence the Little River and the Little Pigeon River, two mountain rivers in the Great Smokies that merge at the town of Townsend, Tennessee. The tubes and riders seem to dance as they bob and zig along in the fast, shallow water, dodging rocks and occasionally flipping over, dunking the rider in the crystal-clear, icy water. The water rushes along in an irregular rhythm that is never quite predictable.
